Do we have past lives?
As I have developed as a hypnotherapist I have become more intrigued about past lives, past life regression and regression and what it means and especially how it can help people - as this is what I do : ) xx
There is lots of things out there that people connect with or believe or not believe - agree or disagree with. I think that it is all about what fits best for you and how we can all use what therapies are out there to our best advantage. It is important to find what is comfortable for you, as there is lots of different types of support and therapies out there, and finding the right one and the right person can be a challenge in its self!!
For those who may be interested in finding out a little bit more about past life regression and regression, or may be interested in having a regression done and understanding how it could help with" letting go" of things that you have been struggling with in the here and now and connecting it to either a past life or when you were younger - this is a little insight into what it means and how it could help you.
History of past life regression
The practice of past life regression goes back to ancient times, and most famously the "Greek Dream Incubation".
"Incubation" is the religious practice of sleeping in a sacred area with the intention of experiencing a "divinely inspired dream or cure" Incubation was practiced by many ancient cultures. Greek and Egyption mystery schools, Prati-Prasav (references to which can be found in the Vedic literature of ancient India), Jati Smaran (the name given to past life recall in Jain Scriptures). References of past life recall also exist in Buddhist Scriptures.
Native Americans have always believed in past lives, but it wasn't until 1928 that the first past life regressions in the United States were developed and conducted by A R Martin of Sharon, Pennsylvania. In 1942 he published a book, RESEARCHES IN REINCARNATION AND BEYOND, describing the experiences his "reviewers" had.
Martin's efforts were unique and so were the results. His "viewers" would go into a complete trance and leave their present selves, behaving and talking like persons from the past, sometimes speaking in languages that they did not know when conscious.
Freud can be considered as the grandfather of our present day regression work. He came up with the idea that by making the unconscious conscious, an individual could restore choice and bring about healing. He discovered the link between past trauma and present symptoms and called it "Psychic Determinism". He established that our past experiences determine our present behavior. This changed the face of psychotherapy forever and is the basis of regression work. LaterJung theorised the concept of a Collective Unconscious and Archetypes (universal patterns).
In spite of its ancient history, past life regression is a continuously evolving field with a wide range of techniques that have been developed to date and continue to be developed even now.
Working with Regression
As with all types of therapies each therapist will have there own way of working, with the underlying core principles of their training. I believe as any type of therapist as in life, you evolve and change over the years into your own style of working, changing with experience and most importantly in time gaining confidence in yourself, your beliefs and way of working.
As is with regression work each therapist will have there own beliefs and unique way of working and will use regression to help people for different out comes.
I am interested in how our past and in some instances past lives can help with current problems that any one can be having in the here and now. The mind is a very powerful tool and should never be underestimated. I believe and have worked with clients to take them back to their younger years through hypnotherapy to revisit a time in their past whether that be a trauma a loss or abuse, to deal with those untreated painful emotions to be able to let go, heal and move forward feeling inner peace and with a more positive out look on their lives.
Similarly I have worked with clients and taken them back to past lives which in some cases has unearthed some interesting things and has alleviated emotions and struggles with relationships that they have been having in their current lives. People can identify with patterns of behavior and can look at things through different eyes and start to understand themselves in a deeper way. Interestingly people love the thought of having lived in a different life time and being taken back can be an amazing thing to experience just for the pure intrigue : )
Whatever your thoughts and beliefs are, past life regression and regression has helped lots of people for lots of different reasons and in my experience as a therapist can be an amazing journey for people : )
